“The Girl” statue belongs to the initial wave of “Skopje 2014” when a competition under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture resulted in the selection, approval and placement of over 30 statues across the city centre.
“The Girl” was one of the sculptures that drew mixed reactions from the public due to the peculiar aesthetic form chosen by the author Grozdanka Kanikova. Three of Kanikova’s pieces were selected in the competition by the Ministry of Culture in 2008.
In addition to “The Girl”, she also authored the sculptures “Fish” and “Observer”. None of the three sculptures by Kanikova remained its initial location for very long as they were relocated in various places.
